Memorial for October 1943

Photo: Laura Stamer. "Displaced Horizon" by artist Karin Lind and erected at memorial ground, 22 Nordre Strandvej, 3250 Gilleleje.

October 2023 marked the 80th anniversary of the dramatic rescue of Jews from Denmark during the Second World War, and the small fishing village of Gilleleje played a central role in these events.

Gilleleje village, became one of the most important starting points for the escape. From here, around 1,300 Danes of Jewish origin were helped to safety in neutral Sweden.

Many of the city's inhabitants risked their lives by hiding the Jews in their homes, attics and churches before the fishermen transported them to safety across the Øresund.

A dark chapter in world history. Therefore, the place and the event are worth commemorating and marking. This is what the Displaced Horizon memorial does. With a sculptural grip, the artwork makes sense of this special place, where the escape was made possible by a brave local population.
